Gamera Trilogy

gamera_theatrical_poster

We’ve been eating Gamera!

Actually we’ve just been talking about Gamera in this week’s new, old episode of TerrorVision!

That’s right, another one unearthed from the vault. So, once again, please forgive the audio quality.

In this episode we discuss the 90s Gamera trilogy (not the Gameras lovingly lampooned by MST3K), directed by Shusuke Kaneko. These films have everything! Flying turtles, children who love Gamera, children who HATE Gamera, children who fuse with Gamera’s mortal enemy, and some of the best damn kaiju effects we’ve ever seen. So please join us and special guest star Mike Scholtz as we discuss the loveable and terribly put upon and possible god, Gamera, not to mention how this trilogy might be some of the greatest monster movies ever made!

Year: 1995, 1996, 1999

Smoky’s Commercials

Screen Shot 2016-07-03 at 6.46.49 PM

Ok, now to upload a new episode of TerrorVision-LAST UPDATED FEBRUARY OF 2012?! Hooo boy…

Up from the depths of time and space comes a previously unreleased episode of TerrorVision! Originally recorded in 2011, this episode sat in a half-edited state for five years before now finally being released still in its half-edited state! Please enjoy/forgive any quality issues.

Local commercials! Who doesn’t love ‘em?! Terrible, terrible people, that’s who. But we (and hopefully YOU) are all good people, so this episode is dedicated to a particularly memorable string of local commercials straight outta’ Fargo, North Dakota. These ads center around the now defunct “Smoky’s” restaurant, but more importantly heavily feature the owner “Smoky” himself, in a series of bits ranging from uproariously funny to very uncomfortable. Enjoy as these (mostly) Fargoans wax nostalgic about a piece of local TV history. This podcast guest stars Greg Carlson, and has been rated the best for YEARS running in the F/M area!

Cherry 2000

Released: 1987
Director: Steve De Jarnatt

I don’t remember if there was ever a description here, but now there is! Off the top of my head, Cherry 2000 is a loveable maybe postapocalyptic movie about the drugery of modern life. Tedious office work, lawyers determining if you’ll get sex on dates, and your beloved and titular Cherry 2000 model perfect android wife shorting out from an overflowing and confusingly built dishwasher. This is what sets our…hero (?) Sam Tredwell on his quest to replace his sexy robo-wife. Get ready for a futuristic wild west journey starring Melanie Griffith and Robert Z’Dar!

Mystics in Bali

Released: 1981
Director: H. Tjut Djalil

You may think you know about scary black magic but until you’ve had a floating severed head (with a bit of entrails) hanging from beneath it interrupt a birth by eating the baby being delivered, well, you clearly haven’t experienced Leyak black magic. Seen only in Thailand, and frequently in intermittently fascinating and then boring for long stretches movies, Leyak’s require blood sacrifices and disgusting tongueings in return for…more bad things happening to you. Logically, our main heroine would only delve deeper and deeper into a world filled with floaty thingies and unceasing evil cackles.

Mystics in Bali is an exploitation film set in Thailand, starring a German woman randomly selected to be in the movie while on vacation there. At 80 minutes, the film still pushes the boundaries of patience (and hence a shorter podcast) with its many and unwelcome plot exposition scenes and droll, unsexy romance. That said, severed heads eating babies people. And more shirt changes than you can shake a stick at.

Night of the Comet

Released: 1984
Director: Thom Eberhardt

Many films have meditated on our evitable turn to zombie-ism and literal cannibalism and self-imposed extinction of the human race. Few have considered how much fun it will be. Regina and Samantha are two south California girls who just want to have fun that find themselves sans most of humanity one morning when an asteroid passes by just a little too closely.

Grabbing their guns, motorcycles and Raoul (Robert Beltran) they head to the mall and finally an nefarious underground laboratory while taking on ghouls, mutant sociopathic stock boys and evil scientists. Terrorvision favorite Mary Woronov co-stars in this cult movie compact with cracking dialogue and not a dull moment to be found.

Parents

Released: 1989
Director: Bob Balaban

“Eat Your Meat.”

Michael has a lot to worry about. Its the 1950’s. He is a ten year old boy to whom the world is a scary, scary place. Strict parents enforcing the American Dream through stern glances and verbal threats are the medium through which he experiences the fears of a post-WW II America. The bomb and societal norms being threatened are nothing compared to what Michael deals with on a daily basis. I mean, imagine if you had to eat leftovers everyday?

And your parents were cannibals.

Oh, and it was directed by this guy.

Starcrash

Remember the late ’70’s? As every member of Terrorvision was born in the 80’s they do not. But if they had, dear reader, they would have remembered in the days of yore when Star Wars’ long shadow crept over the entirety of cinema. A ‘force’ to be reckoned with…

Ok we thought this movie was a Roger Corman movie and it isn’t its just bad. And its a rip-off of Star Wars. But really funny. In episode 9 we discuss just what makes a so-bad-its-good movie worth watching and what our favorites of all time are. Starcrash ranks near the top for many.
